Greetings from Taperillas, Simba land in the beautiful foot hills of the Andes mountains. We just finished our bilingual Romans course. It was a joy to teach the Word, to be taught the Word and to see people respond to the Word. Let me tell you about it.

The teachers were Pastor Ismael, Pastor Angel, hermano Gil, hermano Javier, and I. We taught in Spanish. Felix and Arturo taught in Simba Guarani. There weren’t as many students as we had prayed for but one brother reminded me that those that God wanted to be there were there. The material taught to both groups was Romans chapters 1 to 8: justification only by faith in the substitutional death, burial, and resurrection of Christ; sanctification by grace thru faith in the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit; and glorification, our future assurance because of faith in Jesus Christ alone. It was such a blessing to hear these men teaching these truths with conviction and passion.

When we wrapped up the course with testimonies students shared how they were understanding the gospel clearly for the first time. Others testified to understanding their walk with the Lord in a better way. Praise the Lord for the encouraging testimonies. Pray that this message received will be passed on to others.

THANK YOU for your partnership in giving and prayer. We prepared nearly a thousand dollars worth of written material for use in this course and for future courses. Students and teachers alike had good resource material to take home with them. By God’s grace, Larry and Linda Depue

Bitterness is very much like the South American vine known as the “matador.” Beginning at the foot of a tree, the matador vine slowly works its way to the top. But as it grows, it kills the tree, and when at last the top is reached, it sends forth a flower to crown itself. Matador literally means “killer.”

Bitterness may appear harmless when it is small, but if it is allowed to grow, its tendrils of resentment, malice and hatred soon clasp themselves around the heart and eventually kill the soul.

Elton Trueblood said, “It used to be that Christianity was a revolutionary faith that turned the world upside down. But today Christians sit in Sunday morning church services looking at their watches, wondering what time dinner will be served, or thinking about the kickoff. And we hope that church won’t interfere with the things we would really rather be doing.”

Many Pastors are admonished to keep their sermons short, or to finish them by a certain time on Sunday mornings, and get raked over the coals if they don’t. Hearing what God has to say is not the priority, the time on the clock and afternoon plans are the priority.

Sunday dinner, Sunday sports, and other Sunday activities have pushed God into the background of people’s lives. And if worship services interfere too much with their plans, people just stop going altogether.

Has a ”hurry up and get this over with” attitude replaced an attitude of worship?

Has an attitude of obligation toward going to the house of the Lord replaced an attitude of gladness and thanksgiving?

Has Sunday morning worship become Sunday morning countdown, to how long before it’s over?

Is a few hours a week too much to give to the One who created you and cares for you, Who gave His Son for you, and Who died for you?

Is He really Lord of your life when your mind is on anything but Him when you’re in His house to worship Him?

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the LORD.” Psalm 122:1

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. Psalm 100:4

Christianity is still a revolutionary faith, but sadly many Christians consider it more of an interference in their lives than a revolution.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings once again from Singapore. First of all, thank-you to each of you who have prayed for us during this time. Hollie and I are so thankful to be a part of God’s family. We have seen His hand in so many ways since we have been here. We are not alone in this, but we have brothers in sisters in Christ who have rallied around us and who truly care. We praise the Lord for His faithfulness and for going before us even before we arrived here in Singapore.

Our appointment went well and Hollie’s doctor laid out our options for the condition that Hollie has. It is amazing to us how quickly things can happen here in Singapore. In a few short hours Hollie was preregistered, had a blood test, urine test, chest x-ray and had an ECG We thank the Lord for the day we had before the appointment and the day after the appointment to pray and seek God in this big decision. We have asked God for peace in both our hearts as we are both faced with the realities of surgery. We thank the Lord for bringing other sisters in Christ across Hollie’s path, who have been through this surgery and who could relate to Hollie what she will be facing in the days ahead.

In less than 8 hours Hollie is scheduled for surgery (1:00 am EST on Feb. 4th). Please pray that God will guide Dr. Kek’s hand as she performs the surgery and also for the anesthesiologist as Hollie will be put to sleep and brought out of sleep after the surgery. Please pray there will be no complications and that Hollie’s body will heal well after the surgery. As of right now she is scheduled to be in the hospital until February 7th. Please pray there will be no post op infection.

Thank-you for standing with us during this time and for your prayers. We appreciate each and every one of you!

Resting in Him,

Dear friends and partners,

Thank you for your financial support and your prayers. I want to share with you some of the results of YOUR ministry and some of the near future plans for more ministry so that you can continue to partner with us!

Romans 3:24 states, “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” That has been the basis of our recent ministry.

The month of January has been full for. We left our field conference early to go to Monte Blanco for a 3 day youth camp with about 200 young people. I had several opportunities to share the Word and to encourage campers in their walk with the Lord.

Immediately following the youth camp we started our yearly month long DEAM school (discipulado en accion misionera) in Los Negros. Fourteen young people (including one Simba young man) participated in 10 days of intense discipleship and Bible teaching. The second part of the discipleship course involved putting missions into practice. This year for two days we traveled by boat down the Chapare River, deep into the Amazon tropics. (The mosquitoes were horrendous!) There is a small church there. We, as a discipleship team, organized a youth camp for the church, putting into practice the evangelistic tools that we learned. There were well over 100 participants at camp, plus many adults. Five times a day Bolivian pastors and I taught the adult group Romans 1-5. One of the sessions I taught was Romans 3: 21-30, “the bad news”. Paul spends the first 3 and 1/2 chapters of Romans making sure that we understand that there is NO way we can find favor with God (be justified)) through our own merits. “We just ain’t good enough!” Then Paul finally gets into the good news, that there is just one way to find favor with God (to be justified). And it’s free, it’s by grace, and it’s by the price that only Christ could pay. I camped on verse 24. ”Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” After the teaching many exclaimed they were understanding the Gospel in a clear way for the first time.

How exciting to be an ambassador for Christ in partnership with you! Please don’t minimize your partnership in giving and in prayer! We need it. We thank you.

Up coming events for which we would ask your prayers:

February 13-17 we are hosting a bilingual Romans 1-8 work shop in Taperillas. One group of men will be taught in Simba and another group will be taught in Spanish. I will have the help of Felix Avendano and Arturo Llorenty teaching in the Simba language and Pastors Ismael Perez, Angel Pena, and brother Javier Baldivieso and his father teaching in Spanish. Pray that there will be good attendance and that the Word will be taught and understood clearly.

March 5-9 we are hosting a pastors’ retreat in Taperillas. We expect about 15 pastors and their families. Pray that we will be an encouragement to these faithful servants of the Lord.

One of our biggest expenses recently has been for written materials that we give out to the participants of the Bible courses. Thank you for giving so that we can pass on valuable study tools. Please pray that God would continue to provide for these Bible courses.

Thankful that Christ paid the debt I could not pay,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ at Jetersville Baptist Church,

The month of January has started off with a bang. Thanks so much for your faithful prayers and financial support for our family and ministry! Thanks once again for being on our team!! We look forward to serving the Lord with you in 2012.

Please rejoice with us as another tribe in P.N.G. has had the opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ in their mother tongue. The name of the tribe is the North Waghi tribe. The Creation to Christ Bible lessons have been taught and there have been some that have professed a clear testimony of their salvation. There are many who are still being convicted, but have not made the choice yet. Please pray that many more will accept Christ as their Savior. I fly supplies to the three missionary families in this tribe and also transport them to and from Goroka when the need arises. I look forward to meeting some of my new brothers and sister in Christ the next time I fly for this team.

A few updates back we asked you to pray for new missionaries to server on the mission field. God has and is answering your prayers. I had the privilege of flying two new missionary families out to remote jungle locations for them to complete their “bush orientation”. When a new missionary family comes to the field they learn the trade language Pidgin English and then they move out to a tribal work and live there for six weeks. It is there they practice using the trade language and observe and learn what it takes to live in a remote tribal location. The tribal location is an existing N.T.M. work so there are veteran missionaries there who can mentor and encourage the missionaries as they go through their “bush orientation”. Please pray for theWalker family and Hostetter family as they go through this orientation and look to the Lord for wisdom and direction on which tribal work to locate. Please pray for their children also as they adjust to living in a remote area. We praise the Lord for each one of these families as they sacrifice to bring the gospel message to the tribal people of P.N.G.

Serving Him with you,

Read part 1 first, Trust In The Lord.

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Don’t Lean on Your Understanding

The verse involves a positive–something you must do. But it also involves a negative–something you must not do. Don’t lean on your own understanding. Basically, the verse is telling us that we ought not to be self-reliant. We cannot pursue a course of action, a financial decision, a business move, a relationship, or an educational choice, simply based on our own understanding. It must be founded in our trust in God.

Self-reliance is such a deceptive trap. We begin to pride ourselves in something–our savvy, our looks, our intellect, our spirituality, our family, whatever. And when we do, it takes away our trust in the Lord. It has become trust in self. The result is a dangerous compromise that will lead to destruction.

Instead, Acknowledge God. In Everything.

The antidote to this self-reliance is found in the first command of the verse. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Which is developed in the next verse: “In all your ways acknowledge him.” The word “acknowledge” isn’t merely a polite tip of the hat to the Man Upstairs, or a few words of grace over your meal, or even perfunctory attendance at church to let Him know we’re still cool with what He’s doing. It’s way more. It’s allowing Him access, control, command, and involvement in all your ways.

What’s the result of this? Will God ruin your life? Will he be a Sovereign Killjoy? Will He rob you of fun? The verse ends on a promise. What is it?

He will make your paths straight.

The promise is put in the form of a metaphor. What does it mean to have straight paths? Several things. First, paths lead toward an end–a destination, a goal. Thus, trusting God wholeheartedly in every area of life gives your life a sense of purpose and priority. Second, it indicates that there will be a clear understanding of where you are going and what you are doing. It makes daily decision-making an easier and less painful task. You realize you are trusting Him. He, in turn, is making your paths straight. Thus, the way ahead is more apparent. Third, “straight paths” suggests moral purity. It suggests a life that has less of sinful compromise and more of wholesome attitudes, actions, and behavior.

That’s the kind of life that God promises. It’s the kind of life that you can have. It begins with trust. It involves acknowledging God in every way.

It’s simple. It’s short. Yet it’s incredibly powerful. Proverbs 3:5-6 is one of the most familiar passages in the Bible–with good reason. It sets forth a life-changing truth that is worthy of our attention. Spend three minutes reading this article, and see if you agree.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Let’s break down this life-changing truth to make sure we understand it.

Trust in the Lord.

It starts with trust. Any real relationship has to start with some level of trust. It’s the only way a friendship will endure. It’s the only way a marriage will work out. It’s the simple reason why an employer hires workers, or why the workers stay employed. It’s all about trust. Trust in the Lord, however, takes on an entirely new dimension. This is our trust in an eternal, all-powerful, all-wise, all-loving God. He is worthy of our trust. The trust is important, not just because of who God is, but because of the way in which we must trust him: with all your heart. It involves every fiber of your being. That’s the kind of trust we can have in God–a complete, unshakable, deep, abiding trust.

If you are a Christian, you trusted God for salvation. You can trust Him with the rest of your life, too–every detail.

Read part 2, Don’t Lean On Your Understanding
